Legal aid successfully pressured Governor Hochul to sign the Less is More Act, which profoundly reformed New York`s draconian parole laws and provided relief on an overcrowded and dangerous island of Rikers Island. Our lawyers were also instrumental in drafting the Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act, a national legalization model that combines the removal of criminal records with investment in communities of colour that have borne the brunt of prohibition. Both bills are part of Janet`s legacy to bring substantial, long-term progress to New York. His accomplishments include expanding the organization`s client services, providing equal pay with municipal attorneys for lawyers just starting their careers, modernizing the organization`s operations, and creating a positive workplace that leverages and celebrates the diversity, equity and inclusiveness of Legal Aid.

In 2011, she left the New York Attorney General`s Office, where she oversaw a number of high-profile actions. Janet returned to Legal Aid in 2019, leading the organization`s advocacy efforts that resulted in sweeping tenancy regulations and historic pre-trial reforms. Legal Aid was Janet`s professional home, and she is proud of how the organization has become the core New York institution it is today, focused on the clients and communities it serves. „I don`t know if we were the point of contact, the thought leader or the practice leader on how we can represent our clients holistically,“ Sabel said. „That`s who we are now.“ The pandemic has underscored the need for housing protection for New York City tenants, and Legal Aid has fought tirelessly for a federal emergency retirement assistance program with strong protection against evictions. As families continue to struggle to stay in their homes, our advocates are at the forefront of creating long-term housing solutions. In a victory for New York City children, our New York City class action lawsuit has allowed thousands of students living in homeless shelters. We have also passed new laws that put the humanity of our youngest clients at the centre as they navigate the juvenile care and justice systems.

When Janet Sabel took the helm of the nation`s largest nonprofit advocacy organization earlier this year, she had already spent 25 years of her career in legal aid. She left the nonprofit in 2011 for the New York State Attorney General`s Office and worked first as deputy attorney general for social justice and then as assistant attorney general. Sabel has overseen high-profile actions such as a landmark antitrust case involving the sale of Alzheimer`s drugs, the state`s first enforcement of mental health parity laws, and the resolution of a redlining investigation by a Buffalo bank. She has also helped challenge the Trump administration`s policies on immigration, travel bans and sanctuary cities, and overseen fraud prosecutions against Trump University.
